I do drink coffee (to survive ;)), but seem to be mostly alright if I drink it black. For my part I’d try switching to half decaf, then a quarter before quitting. Have started keeping a food and bowel movement diary since my colonoscopy so i hope it turns up something. So there’s my two cents. I might switch to tea just to see what happens. Learning about Ltheanine was quite interesting as well. Dates have probiotics I have been told, and also help with intestinal problems, so combining with this may help too. And I believe the answer for me has been probiotics. Still leery though. I’ve read in a few places I’ve read that drinking more fluids CAN help IBS symptoms in some cases. Interestingly enough, I’ve still been having chocolate, that doesn’t seem to have enough to cause me problems. Some advice I have found that has helped me and made my life a LOT better is yogurt with probiotics. Together with dietary fibre supplements, my diarrhea problem’s been resolved 98%. I have a feeling that is similar to some of the stories here – especially Chad – where now you are experiencing those symptoms even without drinking coffee. Self medicating with coffee :). Note that coffee may stimulate the bowels but should not cause diarrhea. I do know research shows that many people with IBS have “reflux”. So, I drank that coffee, woke up about 7, watched tv, had a teeny urge to go (it’s rarely urgent) came out fast, normal stool, like it usually does, then comes the tiny soft blobs, sometimes with straining involved. My symptoms are way better than they used to be, but still, room for improvement. I recently learned that Cholestyramine (Questran) is used for people who have a syndrome after having the gallbladder removed of immediate diarrhea after eating.The Questran absorbed bile acids which are the main cause of the diarrhea. Black tea has from 15 to 60 mgs of caffeine, green tea goes from about 25 to 40 mgs. I just can’t seem to get moving without it. Well, a hypocrite would say just stop the caffeine all together.
